HOW TO RUN A PENETRATION TEST TENDER WITH US

Penetration testing is used to assess potential impacts to an organisation and suggest counter-measures to reduce risk. 

Performing a penetration test is a highly skilled job. You can use an industry accreditation body such as CREST, Tiger scheme or Cyber Scheme. to find suitable suppliers.

Having a clear scope definition is important when specifying your requirements. Many vendors will ask you to complete a Pre-Evaluation Questionnaire. Answering these questions once and sharing it with all the participants you invite can be a really good way to communicate your requirements efficiently. Some example questions are:

  • How many domain names to be tested
  • Does the application require authentication?
  • Total of number of dynamic pages in scope for the test (Estimate)
  • Total number of available user roles (Admin/Operator/Internal user/External user/etc..)
  • Is the test to be time-limited or exhaustive

Ask questions. As well as asking participants to submit their price, you should also ask questions to understand their offer better. Participants will often produce a proposal document, and you can ask for this in your questionnaire. Example questions are:

  • Are you CREST certified?
  • Please provide a proposal document.
  • Are there any additional costs which are not included in your quote, if so please details below
  • is there a contract that will need to be signed, if so please attach an example
  • Do you agree with terms outlined in the document

When asking people to bid, make sure they are very clear on what they are bidding for, so that all offers are comparable. Generally, it will be sufficient to have a single lot so that people can bid against the whole service. However, if you have a complex requirement and would consider working with more than one company, then make a separate lot for each requirement, so that you understand the offer.
