Digitizing Procurement: Not Everyone Takes The Same Road To Rome – Andre Le Lerre

In my January 2nd, 2019 post on LinkedIn titled ‘2019 Year of the Leapfrog’, I wrote that “extracting benefits from new technologies” can be problematic and that taking “small incremental process improvement steps are not going to be sufficient for most organisations.” I then went on to say that achieving digital success occurs with “bold leapfrog jumps forward in ways of working and doing business.” In short, incremental improvement in business performance will not cut it in 2019.

Now you might think that the story ends there. But my words are as much a call to action regarding the vision, as the strategy for getting there itself. Your transformation vision has to start with questioning your current ways of working and doing business, but the road to getting there can take many different routes. In short, every journey begins with an initial step on a selected route towards your end goal. Hence the title of my post today.

The fact is that there are, so to speak, many different roads that lead to Rome. While finding the right road for your organization is the key, you still have to have the big picture, your destination, i.e., Rome in your end sight.

A recent article by the Country Manager for Nutanix which suggests that with digital transformation it is better to “go smart than go big” is a perfect example of another possible road.

Citing the often referenced Jim Collins book Good To Great, and more specifically the Flywheel analogy, the writer champions a different, longer road, suggesting that when it comes to transforming your organization, there is no big bang or “single event.” He then goes on to write “Transformation according to Collins is a cumulative process of smaller events.”

Depending on where you start, and while the road to Rome will be different for each traveller, the key to your success is to identify the right road for you and your organization.

As a result, I am very much looking forward to contributing as a guest panellist in the May 21st Market Dojo webinar; Evolution Before Transformation: How Procurement Will Best Leverage Digital On-Demand To Achieve Real Change.

The panel, which will also include an end-user client executive, will focus on providing you with a practical and in-depth roadmap to transforming your procurement practice regardless of where you are on your digital journey.

Oh, and by the way, I do know something about the roads into Rome because I live there!
