The following blog is written by our CEO and Market Dojo co-founder Alun Rafique. Alun reflects on Market Dojo’s 9th year as a business and highlights some of the keys to our success in the last 12 months!
Making it through our ninth year
The earliest references to the nine lives of a cat are linked to a belief that a witch could take the form of a cat nine times. Luckily, we haven’t had to use up any of our nine lives yet at Market Dojo. Although I prefer this reference for the number nine to the Japanese version, where the number nine may be considered unlucky as it sounds like the word for “pain” when it is pronounced. “Ouch!”
We have had a roller coaster of a year, from seeing the team more than double in size, to the release of a brand new solution. So without further adieu and following the theme of nine, here are nine highlights from our year.
INVESTMENT: Earlier this year we attracted investment from a large Sovereign Wealth Fund. Having successfully grown organically since our inception, this year we searched for investment to help spread the word of Market Dojo’s on-demand procurement solutions. We feel very fortunate to have found the right partner, who share our vision and goal of helping procurement professionals around the world, in a rapidly growing market.
TEAM: Team Dojo has doubled in size! Our plan is still the same as before, although now we are developing more, marketing to a wider audience and looking at faster international expansion.

INDUSTRIES: The variety in our customer base is ever-growing. We had always wanted to help companies of all sizes and backgrounds with their procurement technology. By focusing on procurements’ challenges, and not specialising in a particular niche, we have more customers than ever before using our solutions from a huge variety of industries.
The graph below shows a representation of the number of customers per industry. The consultancy market is still our biggest, due to the accessibility, price point and usability perspective of our solutions.
ROADMAP: This year we have really focused on our vision of the ‘Procurement CRM’. Too long have emails and spreadsheets been the #1 choice for procurement activities. The risks and inefficiencies that these create has long been overlooked. As the procurement profession need accessibility of data to act as a trusted advisor to the business, the importance of solutions that are readily adopted is imperative to properly gather supply chain data. It is our vision to create tools that help procurement with their operational day to day activities as well as strategic procurement.
USER BASE: This continues to grow rapidly for both the hosts and the suppliers. Our supplier engagement module is really gaining traction in the market due to its flexibility. Working for any businesses onboarding process and at an agreeable price point. We have had customers onboard 1000’s of suppliers in weeks, as well as helping out in areas with typically poor supplier electronic engagement like Uganda and Mozambique. RESOURCES: Our marketing crew have been working overtime. This year we have been working on webinars, podcasts, case studies, category pages and videos, as well as strengthening our ever-growing hub of materials. If you can’t find it here, it isn’t worth knowing!

CONTRACTS: 2019 was the year we released our Contract Management module. Contract Dojo was developed after extensive client workshops where we interacted with our clients to answer questions such as: “What does a Contract Management solution do? What should a Contract Management solution include? How do you work a Contract Management System?”
Since its release, we have already had a fair few updates including ‘Elasticsearch’. Anyone can try the tool by storing your first 10 contracts for free, so why not try it out?
ON DEMAND: Our on-demand model is still unique in the procurement technology industry after nine years. No other provider offers the true self-service capability and a sandpit to try all the features out before nuying. More companies than ever try our solution starting with an Auction for £500 a month and then go onto try our other capabilities. It simply presents a low-risk methodology for people looking at solutions who don’t want to commit to a huge outlay from the getgo.
FILMS and ADVERTS: We have been working with CIPS, ITN and the Business Reporter amongst others on some very exciting up and coming projectss. As with any growing business, we are always on the lookout for new ways to garner people’s attention. We have embarked on a number of programs; from adverts in CIPS magazines to videos with professional news outfits. See the ITN video here and the advert below. Let us know what you think.
